Days are longer, temperatures are higher and entertaining outdoors is lasting long into the night. To keep the party going after the sun goes down, you need to add light to your outdoor space. So what’s an easy way to add light that still packs a big design punch? String lights!

While string lights are normally thought of around the holidays for decorating houses or trimming a tree, they have definitely proven to be the perfect lights for any open outdoor area, like a backyard or patio. Here are several images of modern outdoor spaces that have incorporated string lights for some major backyard inspiration to try yourself:

Don’t be afraid to add string lights to your minimalist modern patio. Most of the time, they are thought to work with rustic decor only. But the clean-lined, ultra-modern rooftop deck of this oceanfront beach house proves they work with any design scheme. The trick is to suspend the string lights in straight lines rather than drape them in an overlapping arrangement. I love how the clean lines blend with the modern minimalist decor rather than draw your eye away from the patio’s styling.

What’s the perfect formula for entertaining outdoors during warm summer months? A spacious yard, plenty of seating, and lots of ambient light. So how do you add light to backyards without any overhead covering? Instead of being mounted to a ceiling or a wall like other outdoor lights, string lights just need to be suspended between two points whether it is rooftops, posts, or trees. I like how in this backyard the lights are hung between the trees for a playful and whimsical look.

Romantic, outdoor dinner parties under starry night skies will never be overshadowed by clouds ever again. A set of Edison bulb string lights are reminiscent of starlight because they provide a desirable, warm glow that isn’t overpowering, yet keeps the space illuminated long into the night. To achieve a casual yet stylish look like this side patio, simply drape the string lights between rooftop corners.

One of the reasons string lights are so great is their versatility. You can create an infinite amount of arrangements with them from random crisscross patterns to straight lines to checkerboards and more. The tick-tack-toe styling of the lights in this backyard is visually pleasing as it perfectly complements the straight lines and angles of the house. I also really like how the string lights use LED bulbs to cast a crisp white light that shines bright enough to be enjoyed indoors through the home’s many windows.

String lights aren’t just for open spaces; they are perfect for adding a little sparkle to a covered porch. While they are often more decorative than functional, the small twinkle lights tucked next to the beams of this porch awning create a barely-there style that reminds me of the stars that glitter in the sky at night.
